STORYLINE

UNESCO's Special Envoy to Haiti Michaelle Jean visited the country (5 & 6 September) focusing on sites of cultural importance.

The main reason of the visit was to survey the conditions of the cultural monuments as well as to follow up on the work on UNESCO's reconstruction and preservation projects.

Michaelle Jean also had numerous meetings with authorities including the Haiti's President Michel Martelly.

In Milot, located in the northern part of Haiti, she had visited two of the most important Haitian historic monuments - the ruins of the Sans-Souci Palace and a famous Citadele both built in the beginning of 19th century.

Paul Telfor, Milot's Mayor conveyed to Jean that the politics of Milot's community has always been to give absolute priority to the management of the historic and tourism sites.

According to Jean, the reconstruction and preservation of the cultural heritage can play a pivotal role in the reconstruction of the entire country.

Jean also stressed that UNESCO's strategy has always been to use culture as an engine for reconstruction. And she said that was one of the aspects of her mission there.

Before ending her visit to Haiti, Michaelle Jean had met also representatives of UN in Haiti.
