AUSTRALIA / BAN WRAP

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon spent the last day of his Pacific trip in Sydney and Canberra where he gave a speech at the University of Sydney in which he said time was running out to tackle climate change and that a revolution of hope was under way in the Middle East and North Africa. "I know that Australia has paid a heavy price for its tremendous contribution over the years. Eight uniformed Australians died while serving in peacekeeping operations. Their lives were far too short but their impact was great and enduring."

STORYLINE:

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon wrapped up his four-nation trip to the South Pacific today (8 Sept) with visits to Sydney University, the national arboretum and the Australian Police International Deployment facility.

Addressing students and other members of the academic community at Sydney University, Ban thanked "Australia for being one of the world's leading donors of humanitarian assistance to the people of Libya."

Ban, who is due back in New York tomorrow, attended the International Conference in Support of the New Libya which was hosted by President Nicolas Sarkozy of France and Prime Minister David Cameron of the United Kingdom before arriving in Australia on 3 September.

Ban later travelled to the capital, Canberra, where he participated in a tree-planting event at the National Arboretum with young school children in an area that was burned out by a major fire in 2003.
 
"The United Nations is committed to make this world, this planet greener and greener," he said, highlighting the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) campaign that aims to have at least one billion trees planted worldwide each year. Ban planted an olive tree, both as a symbol of peace and because it helps to cut greenhouse gas emissions which lead to global warming.

Ban also visited the Australian Federal Police's training school for police being deployed to international peacekeeping missions, and watched a training exercise in which police cadets played the part of rioters in a mock-Pacific Island village.

Australia was the first country to contribute troops to a UN peacekeeping mission, and since then has contributed to the cause of peace in countries ranging from Cambodia to Cyprus to Afghanistan.
