STORYLINE:

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon arrived in Australia over the weekend and met with government officials on global issues of concern as part of a four-nation visit to the Pacific region.

Upon arrival, Ban met Australia's Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd to discuss the famine in Somalia and the drought-related humanitarian crisis in the wider Horn of Africa, as well as developments in Libya and Syria. 
 
Their discussions also touched on the work of the Secretary-General's Global Sustainability Panel, of which Rudd is a member, and forthcoming high-level meetings on nuclear safety and security, and women's and children's health during the General Assembly session in New York later this month.

Following his meeting with Rudd, Ban met with Australia's Prime Minister Julia Gillard and praised the country for its strong voice in international affairs, saying Canberra worked with the UN to address global challenges.

Later that that, he travelled to the Solomon Islands.
