"In 67 seven countries women and girls could lack any protection of domestic violence law and in 75 countries their work has no legal claim to equal pay. IN UN Women we believe that one way we can change these realities is to support women's leadership including that of young women. Women's political participation and leadership is a basic prerequisite for their empowerment as well as necessary for genuine democracy. It facilitates women's direct engagement in public decision making and helps to strengthen government's transparency and accountability. When women are increasingly involved in decision making public services become more gender responsive, are more inclusive and are managed more sustainable."

"The first $4,000 that I raised went to Haiti because of the earthquake there. It was really tragic and the first thing that I really felt that I needed to help because they can't do anything about it."

"I'm really proud to work with the National Charity League which allows me to work with a variety of organizations in my own community. Organizations like Joyful Sewing, Working Wardrobes. Joyful sewing helps cancer patients; we sew blankets sent to them in the hospitals. Working Wardrobes; AIDS women with domestic abuse, so those are all pressing that are here in the United States and I think its really important to raise awareness about that for people that are living in our country."

STORYLINE:

As the International Year of the Youth comes to an end, a day-long event featuring young women and girls keen on addressing global aims and concerns took place at the United Nations (UN) headquarters today (11 Aug).

Called the UN International Year of Youth Culmination Celebration Day, the event featured UN Youth Champion Monique Coleman, Begona Lasagabaster from UN Women as well as young philanthropists such Lulu Cerone, founder of LemonAID Warriors.

Addressing the event, Lasagabaster said "we know that investing in youth, specifically in young women is one of the smartest investments any country can make, not only for accelerating progress towards gender equality and women's empowerment, but social and economic development overall."

Lulu Cerone, who started a lemonade stand to raise funds for the earthquake victims in Haiti last year when she was 11 years old, was at the event to talk about what had inspired her to give back to communities in need.

At an interview with UNifeed, Cerone said that she had raised $4,000 for Haiti adding "I really felt that I needed to help because they can't do anything about it."

Cerone, who works with AllyKatzz, a media company that provides platforms for girls to share information about their work, is currently working on another project called The Bloodwater Mission. Through the project she is raising money to help build wells in villages in African countries.

The event also included a performance from Amanda Hawkins, singer and voice of Cassandra in the musical Cassandra's Angel, and an appearance by Disney star Caroline Sunshine from the show Shake it Up!

Sunshine is involved in several charitable causes including the Joyful Sewing Organization which makes blankets for cancer patients and Working Wardrobes for female victims of domestic abuse.

She called these causes pressing issues in the United States saying "I think it's really important to raise awareness about that for people that are living in our country."

Tomorrow marks the International Youth Day which was endorsed by the General Assembly following a recommendation from the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth in Lisbon in 1998.
