"UNMISS is the name of the new mission and it has two S's so it is the new Mission in South Sudan, and we are provided with the mandate from the Security Council that is different from before. The previous mission was to monitor the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement until the referendum and until the ninth of July."

"Peace consolidation which means help the new government in a process to ensure stability over time and of course this also includes politically inclusiveness etc. The second is related to conflict mitigation to try to insist in the security sector help reform that sector and also help prevent conflict intentions and the third is related to capacity building in particular in the justice and security sectors but also in being an enabler for the development activism in development communities to be able to deliver peace dividends and in this case independence dividends for the South Sudanese people."

STORYLINE:

Hilde Johnson, the newly appointed Special Representative and head of the United Nations (UN) Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS) met with Salva Kiir the President of the Republic of South Sudan today (12 July).

During their meeting they discussed the mandate of the Security Council for the new mission, the responsibilities and the support for the newly independent country of the Republic of South Sudan.

The new mission, UNMISS has different mandate from the Security Council unlike the former United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS), said Hilde.

The new mission has a main responsibility to support the new government and country in various areas as explained by SRSG Hilde Johnson at a stakeout with journalists after the meeting with President Salva Kiir.

Hilde Johnson, the new Special Representative of the Secretary General (SRSG) a citizen of Norway, brings with her significant experience in crises and conflict response in the Horn of Africa, Sudan, Great Lakes, Afghanistan, Timor-Leste and most recently served as the Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
