STORYLINE:

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Mexico launched a campaign on Wednesday (6 July) known as "Declare yourself a defender" in favour of defenders of human rights.

During her high level visit in Mexico, High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay noted that she was a believer that the campaign will contribute to raise awareness about the value of those who defend the human rights in the country.

She highlighted the spirit of the text of the 1998 Declaration on Human Rights Defenders which says that "we all have the right, individually and in association with others, to promote and to strive for the protection and realization of Human Rights and fundamental freedoms at the national and international levels."

Pillay noted that human rights activists "speak out against abuse and violations, including discrimination, exclusion, oppression and violence".

Mexican Rock musician Saúl Hernández, lead singer of the band Caifanes told the audience that "the situation of violence" affecting Mexico is "a call to the population to be concerned for those who work towards this country respecting and being respected for defending human rights."

The campaign's aim is to spread the message about the right to defend the human rights among the general public, as well as to observe the authentic and significant job that the defenders execute, by adopting the Declaration of Human Rights Defenders in the sense that every person can be a defender.
