"Germany intends to demonstrate how it is also possible to produce energy using renewable sources. I believe in this area Germany is an excellent example and we've discussed how we can cooperate more closely in the energy sector. That means that you'll be able to learn from us what kinds of alternatives there are. I think this is especially important in sparsely populated rural areas with decentralized power supply where renewables can be a good possibility."

STORYLINE:

German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited the headquarters of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) in Nairobi, Kenya on Tuesday for a roundtable discussion on the Green Economy.

Welcomed by UNEP's Executive Director Achim Steiner, Merkel toured the new office facilities with 6,000 square meters of solar panels, energy-saving lighting and other green features.

A group of German parliamentarians and business leaders, who joined her during her two-day trip to Kenya, were part of the expert roundtable discussions covering the advantages of the Green Economy, the role of the private sector as well as green initiatives in Africa.

Earlier at a press conference, Merkel focused on the role renewable resources can play in the economic development and Germany's extensive experience in that domain.

Nobel Peace Prize laureate and green advocate Professor Wangari Maathai, a patron of UNEP's Billion Tree Campaign, was among the participants to the roundtable.

On her second Africa tour since becoming Chancellor in 2005, Ms Merkel will also travel to Angola and Nigeria.
