TUNISIA / LIBYA REFUGEE

Over the past month more than 50,000 people mostly ethnic Berbers across the Tunisia-Libya border at Dehiba. One Libyan refugees said people “are on run in every sense, from famine, poverty, darkness and repression.” UNHCR

"First they were very snatching and grabbing things which is very natural when you have lost something. You want to snatch it back, anything, it does not matter put it in your pocket and run away. Where as now they come and they play everyday and they begin to relate to us."

STORYLINE:

In less than a month, 50,000 mostly Libyan refugees have crossed the southern border along Dehiba into Tunisia.

The refugees are coming to camps like this one at Dehiba in search of shelter and food. They describe the shortages and the fear they were forced to live with
in Libya.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Omar, Libyan Refugee:
"In Libya there are big problems. Most of all security problems, but also economic ones too. We are scared for our wives, we have to hide them. At home there is nothing left, only the sun and the air. No fuel, no vegetables, fruits or meat. Nothing, People cannot live like that!"

This camp financed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) took in 1,500 refugees, most Berbers, the Nile Valley's indigenous people.

A second camp was needed to accommodate the steady flow of new arrivals.

The United Nations Refugee Agency set up one 40 kilometres away. It includes a school. Here volunteers arrange games to help the children to help them overcome their anxieties.

Everyday, more refugees arrive, including people who need medical care. They are looked after at the local hospital which much like the city of Dehiba is now affected by the crisis in neighboring Libya.
