"To see deforestation here you can understand that is affecting every one so much. When you have a country that's really plant cover 2 percent and you have got to get back to 10 percent is a very challenging situation to be in. When I have been working through going to homes, going to see the commitment of reforestation with the children in the schools also with people's homes and just understand they realize how important that is to the country of Haiti and then the proud of people have here. It's been very enlightening for me."

STORYLINE:

American tack and field legend and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Goodwill Ambassador Carl Lewis wraps up his two-day visit to Haiti where he participated in "Fruit Trees for Haiti", an initiative launched last year by the agency as part of  the International Year of Forests 2011.

According to FAO, the impoverished Caribbean nation is one of the most deforested in the world with only two per cent of forest cover left. Deforestation in Haiti makes the country extremely vulnerable to flash floods and landslides. 
Lewis' trip comes at the start of hurricane season, which officially began on 1 June. Severe flooding has been reported in both Haiti and the Dominican Republic, which share the same island. 
Lewis visited the Syze Valme Coeur School where students plant fruit trees as a part of the FAO initiative. Lewis participated in a planting session with the students.

"Fruit Trees for Haiti" school project is a part of a larger FAO programme to reforest and shore up watersheds in the region.

FAO forestry experts estimate if 22 trees are planted for every Haitian, a total of 222 million trees, then the newly elected President Michel Martelly's goal of reforesting eight percent of Haiti's land surface in his five years in office could be met.

At a press conference today, Lewis talked about how enlightening is has been for him to see first-hand the reforestation efforts in the country adding "to get back to 10 percent is a very challenging situation to be in."
