Marking the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster today, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that it was “time to face the facts,” that issues of nuclear power and safety were not purely matters of national policy, but of global public interest, which should be treated “as seriously as we treat nuclear weapons.” UNTV

"Nuclear accidents respect no borders. They threaten human health and the environment. They disrupt the economy and devastate communities. They are global in effect. This twenty-fifth anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster is a time for reflection, a time for robust global debate. Nuclear power will likely continue to be an important resource for many nations and can be a part of a low-carbon-emission energy mix in our efforts to address climate change. But it has to become credibly safe, and globally so."

"It is time to face the facts.  Issues of nuclear power and safety are not purely matters of national policy, they are a matter of global public interest. That is why in September, I will convene a meeting of world leaders to take a hard look at all these issues. It is time to undertake a serious global debate on this issue at the level of global leaders. We must treat nuclear safety as seriously as we treat nuclear weapons."

"We cannot neglect nuclear energy benefits as an environmentally clean and resource-low-cost energy source especially upon the conditions of increasing needs of mankind and the United Nations policy of sustainable development. However, the possession of nuclear technologies in the 21st century is not a prerogative only but it is also a huge responsibility of the state both before its own people, neighbouring countries, as well as the whole world."

STORYLINE:
Marking the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster today at headquarters in New York, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that it was "time to face the facts," that issues of nuclear power and safety were not purely matters of national policy, but of global public interest, which should be treated "as seriously as we treat nuclear weapons."

Addressing the General Assembly Hall following a ceremony at the peacebell, Ban told delegates that "nuclear accidents respect no borders," and that they threaten human health and the environment. He added that it was, "a time for reflection, a time for robust global debate".

He said that although nuclear power would likely continue to be an important resource for many nations still it had to become "credibly safe, and globally so."

Ukrainian Ambassador Yuriy Sergeyev told delegates that the benefits of nuclear energy should not be neglected as an energy source when taking into consideration the increasing needs of mankind. However, he said, possession of nuclear technologies in the 21st century was not a prerogative only but "a huge responsibility of the state both before its own people, neighbouring countries, as well as the whole world."

The Secretary General announced that in September, he will convene an international meeting to debate all nuclear issues with global leaders.
