A simultaneous campaign this week to vaccinate against diseases across the regions of Africa, Americas, Eastern Mediterranean, Europe and the Western Pacific will end tomorrow. To date, more than 323 million children and adults have been reached with this initiative. PAHO

STORYLINE:

A simultaneous campaign this week to vaccinate against diseases across the regions of Africa, Americas, Eastern Mediterranean, Europe and the Western Pacific will end tomorrow.

Earlier this week, the Director of the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) Dr. Mirta Roses joined health authorities from Peru and Bolivia, representatives of PAHO and UNICEF along with health workers and community leaders for a celebration launching Vaccination Week in the Americas on the two countries' shared border of Kasani, on Lake Titicaca.

SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Dr. Mirta Roses, Director, PAHO:
"This year our slogan is: Vaccinate your family, protect your community, and what we expect, beginning here in this place so symbolic, so high, that is the roof of our America, we are in the highest place where we could meet all the Americas. This year's campaign, with the slogan "Vaccinate your family, protect your community", encourages vaccinations not just for children, but the entire family and highlights the importance of individual action to protect collective health.

Since its inception nearly a decade ago, Vaccination Week in the Americas has promoted immunization as one of public health's most cost-effective measures and has helped spread the benefits of immunization to the hemisphere's most vulnerable populations, including indigenous people, border and isolated communities, and marginalized urban groups.

To date, more than 323 million children and adults have been reached within the framework of the initiative.
