UNICEF is covering sanitation needs for over 7,000 people at Shousha camp to ensure that the refugees, particularly women and children have access to adequate and hygienic facilities to prevent transmission of diseases. UNICEF

STORYLINE:
 
Stretching over of acres of desert land is the Shousha camp in Tunisia, the first stop for those who manage to escape the turmoil in neighboring Libya.

35 year old Zeinab Idriss was born and raised in Chad but left for Libya 10 years ago.

She recalls her struggle to run away from the country that had become her 'home'

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Zeinab Idriss, migrant:
"After 17 to 20 days of the unrest, the situation became unstable; no one could go out, no man could go to work, everything was closed we were afraid to go out."

Zeinab arrived at this transit camp with her husband and 3 children 2 weeks ago.

Her only solace is having a roof over her head, clean water to drink and food to eat.

Zeinab's family has access to sanitation facilities provided and maintained by UNICEF in partnership with the Tunisian government.

Thousands of migrants like Zeinab are seeking shelter here thousands who are in desperate need of basic necessities

Hygiene kits like this one including soap, towels, tooth paste, toilette paper and laundry detergent are also being distributed to refugees many of whom don't know when they'll leave the camp or where they will go.

Weeks have gone by and Zeinab is still waiting for the the flight that will take her family back to Chad.

She's bewildered by her fate and uncertain of the future but glad to have some support at the beginning of this unexpected journey.
