BANGLADESH / GIRLS CRICKET

With Bangladesh co-hosting the 2011 Cricket World Cup, UNICEF and its partner organizations are using the game to promote female empowerment through sport. STORYLINE: 
 
Girls' cricket teams may not be common in Bangladesh but they're certainly on the rise.

These players are part of the UNICEF-supported Adolescent Empowerment project, which aims to increase adolescent participation across various sectors of Bangladeshi society.

Since late 2009 the project has seen the number of girls' cricket teams across the country jump from 14 to 52.

These players have come to the southern city of Chittagong to compete in an all-girl cricket tournament.

With Bangladesh co-hosting the 2011 Cricket World Cup, UNICEF and its partner organizations are using the game to promote female empowerment through sport and that's not all.

Before a large audience at the cricket ground, adolescents perform a play about HIV and AIDS.

It's part of UNICEF's global ThinkWise campaign, which aims to educate people about the diseases.

Looking on are 19-year-old Arju and 17-year-old Abdus.

They're from two UNICEF-supported adolescent centers, known locally as Kishori clubs and they're taking the ThinkWise message they've been taught to classrooms across Chittagong.

This is one of several high schools they're visiting to spread information and dispel myths about HIV and AIDS

SOUNDBITE (English), Bonny, 15-years-old:
"We got to know how to react with the HIV affected people. We should not ignore them. We should try to accept the way they are. We should not avoid them and we should not distress from the society. So that's what we learned from today."

Such lessons have also been learnt by the players, who say taking part in the cricket tournament has not made them more aware of a key social issue but given them extra confidence.

And while they're not sure which team will win this tournament, there's no question about which team they want to see win the Cricket World Cup – Bangladesh.
