GENEVA / TREES

To celebrate the International Year of Forests, UNECE is creating a temporary forest in the heart of Palais des Nations, in Galerie des Pas Perdus. Almost 100 living trees from 27 different species, with heights ranging from 2 to 6 metres, will be displayed. UNTV

"This exhibition was set up by UNECE and FAO in Geneva to make sure that people, delegates as well as staff working in the Palais would be reminded of the International Year of the Forest. So the idea behind it was to bring the forest into the Palais so that everyone could enjoy a piece of forest."

"Forests are a key element of sustainable development.  They provide us with clean air, they regulate our climate, they make soil fertile and they provide water, but they also have an important contribution to the economic growth and to livelihoods. They sustain 1.6 billion people living on forests in the world and of course they provide employment to many people all over the world."

"Well these trees will have a longer life outside the UN building, but will not leave the UN premises in Geneva as they will be planted in the UN garden in an effort to green the premises. And they'll be planted by UNECE and FAO staff."

STORYLINE:

To celebrate the International Year of Forests, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) is creating a temporary forest in the heart of Palais des Nations in Geneva.

Paola Deda from UNECE said the idea behind the temporary forest "was to bring the forest into the Palais so that everyone could enjoy a piece of forest."

She highlighted the importance of the project adding that forests "sustain 1.6 billion people living on forests in the world and of course they provide employment to many people all over the world."

Almost 100 living trees from 27 different species, with heights ranging from two to six metres, will be displayed, together with illustrations from American artist Monte Dolack and other forest and wood products.

This exhibition, called "The Art of Trees" will reflect on the contribution of forests to global economic, environmental and social wellbeing.

Twenty-one of these trees on display will be planted in Palais des Nations at the end of the exhibition, further enriching its biodiversity.

Deda added that the trees "will be planted in the UN garden in an effort to green the premises."

The exhibition is organized by the UNECE/FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) Forestry and Timber Section, in partnership with the United States Permanent Mission to the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva. It will be open from 11 to 25 February.
