STORYLINE:

United Nations (UN) Special Representative on Sexual Violence Margot Wallström visited Kamako which is located along the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Angola.

The UN reported that last year there were around 1,350 cases of sexual and gender-based violence against Congolese expelled from Angola via the Kamako border entry.

Addressing local officials in Kamako, Wallström talked about the importance of protecting Congloese women who, she added, "are very important for the future of this country."

Last month, a UN humanitarian assessment mission went to Kamako, located in Kasai Occidental, following an increase in expulsions of Congolese from neighbouring Angola. The mission confirmed that people expelled endured ill treatment and human rights abuses, including torture and sexual violence.

Referring to the signed treaty between Angola and DRC, the humanitarian community has called for consultations between the two countries to ensure the full protection of civilians during expulsion processes.
