STORYLINE:

Head of the United Nations (UN) Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) Roger Meece travelled to the village of Bendera in Katanga where recent FDLR presence has been reported.

During his visit on 20 November, he met with Congolese authorities and local villagers on the security situation in the area. Bendera is located along Katanga's border with South Kivu. Local authorities reported that there have been 12 incidents since August this year involving the FDLR in the area.

While in the village, Meece was asked about the possibility of an increased MONUSCO presence in the area. He emphasized on the need to protect civilians and establish "security conditions that would allow people to live their daily live and to go to work in a safe environment."
