STORYLINE:

Nestor Kirchner, who served as Argentina's President from 2003 to 2007, died today (27 October) after suffering a heart attack.

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, in a written statement, expressed his condolences and called Kirchner a friend of the UN who believed in multilateralism.

At a high-level Security Council meeting on Threats to International Peace and Security in 2005, Kirchner addressed other world leaders such as United States President George Bush and Russia's Vladimir Putin calling peace "much more than the lack of conflict." He added that "it stems from the positive posture and dynamic action designed to foster dialogue and understanding."

Kirchner, aged 60, became the Executive Secretary of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) after his presidency. His wife Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner is the current President of Argentina.
