STORYLINE:

The Special Representative of the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General for the mission in the Central African Republic (CAR) and Chad (MINURCAT) briefed the Security Council today (20 October) on the situation in that region.

Youssef Mahmoud told council members that on 15 October, MINURCAT's military had suspended all operational activities and the mission had begun its final withdrawal from Chad, as mandated by resolution 1923 (2010).

He added that "every effort is being made to complete this withdrawal by 31 December."

He described the security situation in north-eastern CAR volatile. He said that given the imminent withdrawal of MINURCAT and the limited capacity of the Central African Government to maintain security in the region, "the alleged attacks by elements affiliated to the LRA are worrisome."

Mahmoud noted that it was essential that the international community step up support to the Government and the country team so that MINURCAT'S hard-won achievements do not fade because of lack of funding and assistance.
