" People say that this is not a profession for women, but I do not listen. I do my job and that's all. Traditionally among the Mossi here women do not make bricks, they don't build houses; we have never seen that. To begin with, we ask the recipients to dig the pit first. After this, we ask them to collect sand and gravel that we use to make the concrete slab. After the slab, six days later, we ask them to make bricks for the walls. When the slab is finished, recipients are asked to water it every morning, noon and evening. If we are reassured that this is done, we make small bricks to complete it."

STORYLINE:
 
Three years ago, Assetta Ilboudo was selling food in a rural market in Burkina Faso when she was offered training to become a bricklayer.

Now, she is one of the bricklayers trained by CREPA, a community based organisation, to provide 75,000 families with their own latrines.

Assetta does not do all the work for the villagers. Those who have been convinced by a triggering campaign and want a latrine must first dig the pit themselves. With the buy-in and toil of individual families, communities are involved in the solution to end open defecation.

Salogo's mayor is proud of her village. In 2007, only eight percent of households had latrines.

Today 40 percent of villagers have their own latrine. Over one thousand have been built.

It is part of a new movement called Community-led Total Sanitation. With support from the Burkina Faso Government, UNICEF and the European Union this approach is being expanded to other villages.

Though this improvement in sanitation is still short of achieving the Millennium Development Goals set for Burkina Faso, access to latrines and hygiene education is having a noticeable effect on the health of the most vulnerable in the community.
