STORYLINE:

India's Foreign Minister issued a call from the General Assembly podium today (29 September) for Pakistan to fulfil its commitment of not allowing its territory to be used by terrorists acting against India.

He added that "if, however, Pakistan were to live up to its commitment not to allow use of its soil by terrorists acting against India, this would significantly help reduce the trust deficit that impedes the development of better bilateral relations between our two countries."

The Foreign Minister said that as neighbours, the two countries have an obligation to work together.

The Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea's (DPRK) Minister of Foreign Affairs said that his country should strengthen its "nuclear deterrent" in response to the threat posed by the United States.

Pak Kil Yon clarified once again that the DPRK's nuclear weapons were not means for threatening third parties, but instead a "self-defensive deterrent, to all intents and purposes, to counter aggression and attack from outside."

He added that as "a responsible nuclear weapon state," the DPRK was willing to join in the international efforts for nuclear non-proliferation and safe management of nuclear material.

Commenting on Iran's nuclear issue the Russian Federation's UN Permanent Representative, Vitaly Churkin, stressed that the Iranian side "must ensure the required level of transparency and cooperation with the IAEA."

As for the Security Council imposed sanctions, Churkin said they were not a "goal in itself." He explained that the objective of the sanctions regime established by the Security Council "is to send a signal to Iran about the need for full cooperation with IAEA, and to give an impetus to the negotiating process."
