"Peace is the only path to the de-occupation of our country. It forms the substance of the strategy on occupied territories that my government has put in motion to engage the populations held hostage by the Russian occupiers. On the other side of the New Iron Curtain that illegally divides our country. Like the Berlin wall the one dividing Georgia will not be brought down by bombs, but by the commitment of citizens to build a free, united country-and by the commitment of the world community to enforce international law and the principles of the UN Charter."

"It was said that some three thousands people were killed on the II September for which we are all very saddened. Yet, up until now, in Afghanistan and Iraq hundreds of thousands of people have been killed, millions wounded and displaced and the conflict is still going on and expanding."

"A door opens to a final two state settlement of the Palestinian Israeli conflict and the establishment of an independent viable and sovereign Palestinian State living side by side with Israel. This will pave the way for a comprehensive regional peace. An end to this conflict is long overdue."

"From now on, the Democratic Republic of Congo will tackle the causes of violence against women, the causes of the recurring conflicts, and at the same time reinforce its judicial apparatus so as to combine peace, justice and security. The fight against impunity is a fundamental option of governmental action."

STORYLINE

The opening day of the annual gathering of world leaders at of the General Assembly's high-level meeting in New York continued this afternoon. (23 September).

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili told the Assembly that "peace is the only path" for the populations "held hostage by the Russian occupiers" in the territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. He added that his country was divided by a "new Iron Curtain" that "like the Berlin wall" will not be brought down "by bombs, but by the commitment of citizens to build a free, united country-and by the commitment of the world community to enforce international law and the principles of the UN Charter."

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said that questions remained over the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States, and in particular over exactly who was responsible for the attacks. During those comments the US and other delegations left the room.

He said that "three thousands people were killed" in the attacks, "yet, up until now, in Afghanistan and Iraq hundreds of thousands of people have been killed, millions wounded and displaced and the conflict is still going on and expanding."

He called for the UN to set up an independent, fact-finding group for those events.

King Abdullah II Bin Al Hussein of Jordan, talking about the Palestinian Israeli conflict, said that "an end to this conflict is long overdue" as "no regional crisis has had a longer or broader impact on global security and stability".

President Joseph Kabila Kabange of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) referred to the recent events in which dozens of women were gang raped by rebels. He said that the DRC will from now on" tackle the causes of violence against women" as well as "the causes of the recurring conflicts, and at the same time reinforce its judicial apparatus so as to combine peace, justice and security".
