"We all face huge logistical constraints. I really would like to insist on this because it's the major challenge we have so far. The population is scattered, some people are still isolated, and it's difficult to reach them. These logistical constraints are really unbelievable in the case of this disaster." 
 
STORYLINE:

Children in Pakistan are bearing the brunt of water-borne illnesses spreading because of the floods, says the World Health Organization (WHO).

At a press conference in Geneva, WHO spokesperson Fadela Chaib told journalists that the young have been especially affected by a rise in acute cases of diarrhoea and malaria from stagnant water.

She added that "all kinds of diarrhoea remains the main consultation or cause of consultation in the region followed by respiratory infections, skin diseases, and now malaria."

At the briefing, the United Nations (UN) said the number of people directly affected by the floods now stood at 17.6 million people. Meanwhile the spokesperson for the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian affairs (OCHA), Elizabeth Byrs, spoke of the considerable logistical constraints that were still facing international organizations.

She said that since the population is scattered "some people are still isolated, and it's difficult to reach them. These logistical constraints are really unbelievable in the case of this disaster."

According to the UN, other than facing the threat from a rise in illnesses such as diarrhoea, typhoid, hepatitis and malaria, about 72,000 children suffer from severe malnutrition.
