CHILE / SIX-MONTH ANNIVERSARY QUAKE

February’s 8.8 magnitude earthquake along with the tsunami that followed wiped out entire neighbourhoods in the coastal city of Talcahuano, leaving most of the city’s residents homeless. Now families are living in shacks located on higher ground. The quake left 2 million people affected and nearly 600 dead. UNICEF

STORYLINE:

Jessica Fritz used to live in Santa Clara, one of the many neighborhoods in the coastal city of Talcahuano destroyed by the tsunami six months ago.

After an 8.8. magnitude earthquake shook central Chile for nearly three minutes, a powerful tsunami followed suit, wiping out entire neighborhoods  and leaving eighty percent of the city's residents homeless. These floor tiles are all that's left of Jessica's home.

SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Jéssica Fritz 12 years old:
"That side is where the door used to be and the windows were on the other side. We are now using both windows in the Mediagua."

As many others who lost their homes Jessica and her family had to relocate to a camp on higher ground.

They live in a Mediagua, a shack made of wood that offers families shelter during emergencies. Families in the area receive support in the form of shelter, food, and other necessary supplies thanks to organizations such as Caritas and UNICEF.

But in spite of the loss and devastation life goes on in Talcahuano. Safe schools have reopened and accommodate students who were displaced out of their own classrooms.

Jessica attends one of the schools spared by the earthquake. She is at the top of her class.

Today victims of the disaster prepare for the oncoming rainy season. They are hopeful of the government's promise to build a permanent home in the next few months.
