"We cannot solve climate change without investing in new energies. It is important. Secondly, energy is crucial for all kinds of human activities, and in fact, in really modernizing an economy, to make the economy competitive, for making manufacturing competitive, to make your costs of production competitive. Again, you can't achieve rapid economic growth without energy. This is why, imagine economies all around the world, particularly in Asia, which are industrializing fast. So, economic development cannot happen without energy. Carbon has no nationality, pollution has no passport: if you make Mexico clean but your neighbor is a dirty one, it affects you."

STORYLINE:

The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) yesterday (15 July) held in its capital a "Public-Private Sector Dialogue on Climate Change: Enhancing Our Readiness for Green Growth", in preparation for the sixteenth Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the sixth Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol, to be held in Mexico, Cancun, Quintana Roo, from November 29 to December 10, 2010.

The event was held at the Foreign Ministry with the participation the UNFCCC Executive Secretary, Christiana Figueres who spoke about oil leak issue at the Gulf of Mexico.

Figueres said that the leak was important evidence of the risks countries ran if they continued depending on fossil fuel as the main source of energy for their economic development.

This forum which was held Thursday, July 15 and Friday, July 16, also enabled the private sector participants to share their best practices in incorporating clean technologies into sustainable production processes.

Meanwhile, on the sides of the forum, the Hotel Geneve, located in the center of Mexico City hosted a press conference of Advisory Group on Energy and Climate Change (AGECC) to reunite and design strategies to accomplish the global objectives of energy access and energetic efficiency.

The panel was formed by Georgina Kessel, Mexican Minister of Energy, Carlos Slim, member of AGECC, and Kandeh Yumkella, General Director of UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

Yumkella stressed that countries cannot solve climate change without investing in new energies. "It is important," he said and added that energy was crucial for all kinds of human activities.

He said that "economic development cannot happen without energy. Carbon has no nationality, pollution has no passport. If you make Mexico clean but your neighbor is a dirty one, it affects you."

The 16th Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC, and the 6th Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol will provide an important opportunity for all countries to commit to ambitious, pragmatic and realistic actions to face climate change.

Throughout the year, and as incoming Presidency of the Conferences, Mexico has been working to facilitate understandings among countries and to move forward the multilateral process. The aim is to achieve an outcome that is ambitious, effective and that can be implemented immediately.
