STORYLINE:

Commemorating the start of the 1950 Korean War, United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today (25 June) visited the Korean War memorial at New York's Battery Park to participate in an event sponsored by the Korean War Veteran Association of Staten Island.

In a heart felt statement Ban commended the armed forces from 21 countries that came under the UN flag to rescue his homeland at war.

Ban remembered how the United States (US) forces "came to my country's rescue. You gave us our freedom. You led us back home. To those of you who fought that war, let me say this, sixty years later, I still see you with six-year old eyes, young, strong, larger than life."

Calling the war an 'unforgettable victory', the Secretary General paid tribute to all the millions of soldiers in the US and around the world for their sacrifice to bring peace, freedom, democracy, and economic prosperity to the Republic of Korea. He said their gift and legacy had been turning "destruction into democracy."

The monument which stands in Battery Park honours military personnel who served in the Korean Conflict which ran from 1950 until 1953. The memorial, dedicated in 1991, was designed by Welsh-born artist Mac Adams (b. 1943) and is notable as one of the first Korean War memorials erected in the US.

The Korean War broke out along the 38th parallel, a latitudinal line separating the countries, on June 25 1950 when North Korean troops attacked several strategic points along the parallel and headed south towards Seoul.

The UN Security Council responded to the attack by adopting (by a 9-0 vote) a resolution that condemned the invasion as a "breach of the peace." US President Harry Truman quickly committed American forces to head a combined UN military effort in the region.
