MOZAMBIQUE / CHILD RIGHTS CONCERT

UNICEF joins forces with the International Festival of Music and the Association for Artists to host a concert with some of Mozambique’s top musicians dedicated to spreading the word and changing attitudes against child abuse, violence and trafficking. Wednesday 16 June is International Day of the African Child. UNICEF

STORYLINE:

Some of Mozambique's top musical talent joined forces with Caroline Henderson, a Goodwill Ambassador from UNICEF Denmark, at an outdoor concert on the outskirts of Maputo.  
 
SOUNDBITE (English) Caroline Henderson, UNICEF Denmark Goodwill Ambassador:
"Violence against children is a very big global problem."
 
The reason to raise awareness against the abuse, violence and trafficking of children. The concert is one of a series of events that are taking place for two weeks in the lead up to day of the African Child on June 16.

In the last few years much has been done to combat violence against children and women.  In this support center in Alto Mae, a crowded neighborhood of Maputo, victims can come to get specialized care.  
 
Maria Supinho, who has been in the police force for 33 years, runs the 24 hour center with a team of 20 police who provide counseling, legal advise and shelter.

They work closely with the local hospital, where medical care can be provided if needed 
 
The center run by the Ministry of Interior with support from UNICEF and non-governmental organization is one of 200 across the country.

A 2008 survey showed that a third of women between 15-49 years feel that men have the right to beat them under certain circumstances.
 
That is why the voice of Mozambique's super stars like Stewart Sukuma, an advocate and musician is so critically important.
