STORYLINE:

Head of the UN Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC) Alan Doss, set to retire at the end of the month, bid farewell to UN staff in Goma, North Kivu last Friday (18 June).

Doss, who has been with MONUC since 2007, received parting gifts from the staff in Goma. A local Congolese artist, in appreciation for the work done by Doss for the Congolese, presented the MONUC chief with a painting.

Doss said that he was ending his career in the UN's largest peacekeeping mission with mixed feelings, satisfaction as well as appreciation for the work done by the MONUC team.

He commended the work done by the UN peacekeepers and their relationships with the Congolese population and urged them to continue their good work for a better Congo in the coming years.

Alan Doss has spent more than 40 years of his professional life in the service of the UN in peacekeeping, development and humanitarian assignments in Africa, Asia and Europe as well as at the UN headquarters in New York.

The UN Mission mandate was recently renewed until 2011. The Mission will be renamed from MONUC to MONUSCO (UN Mission for Stabilization in the Congo) from 1 July.

MONUSCO will mainly focus on civilian protection and stabilization plans. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, recently appointed Roger Meece, a former US diplomat to the DRC to replace Doss from next month.
