In his speech at the opening of the Alliance of Civilizations Forum in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says the mission of the Alliance must go deeper still, with its aims among the most important of the 21st century. UNTV

STORYLINE:

The United Nations Alliance of Civilization opened its third annual Forum in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil today (28 May). At the building of the city's Museum of Modern Art, over 2000 participants, including political and corporate leaders, civil society activists, youth groups, faith communities, research centres, foundations and journalists are convening to discuss joint actions to improve relations across cultures, combat prejudice and build lasting peace.

At the opening ceremony, Brazilian President Lula da Silva welcomed UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Prime Minister Erdogan of Turkey, President Sampaio, High Representative of the Alliance of Civilizations, among other Heads of State.

The Alliance of Civilizations aims to bridge the world's divides and to build trust and understanding across cultures and communities worldwide.

On April 2007, Secretary General Ban Ki-moon appointed Jorge Sampaio, former president of Portugal, as High-Representative for the Alliance. Under his leadership, the Alliance embarked on an extensive program of work which includes a range of practical initiatives and projects.
