STORYLINE:

Today (12 April) the United Nations (UN) flag at the UN Headquarters in New York was at half-staff to mark the tragic death of Lech Kaczynski, President of Poland, who died in a plane crash on Saturday morning (10 April).

Speaking to the reporters the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today added his voice to international tributes for the late Polish President with whom he had been working very closely, particularly on climate change.

Ban stressed that the UN stands with the Polish people and Government at this time of sorrow.

Lech Kaczynski, who had served as President since 2005, died alongside his wife Maria and 94 others when their plane crashed on Saturday (10 April) morning as it approached an airport in the Russian city of Smolensk.

The heads of Poland's air force, navy and land forces, the chairman of the country's central bank and many leading parliamentarians, historians and civil servants are also among the dead. The Polish delegation had been traveling to Russia to attend a memorial event for the notorious massacre at Katyn of thousands of Poles by Soviet forces during World War II.

The UN flag will again be flown at half-staff on the day of the official funeral. A tribute to the late Polish President also will be held at the beginning of the General Assembly Plenary meeting on Thursday (15 April) at 10 am.
