STORYLINE

A bridge on the main road connecting Southern Sudan with neighboring Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was inaugurated today.

The bridge is located at the Yei, a town which connects Southern Sudan to its neighboring countries.

South Sudan's Minister of Transport and Roads Anthony Makana said that the main road in the town allows goods coming from Uganda, Kenya and DRC reach other States in southern Sudan.

The bridge at Yei took three months to build and is funded by the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS). The World Food Program (WFP) conducted the actual construction.

During the inauguration of the Yei bridge, UN Regional Coordinator for Southern Sudan David Gressly said that UNMIS would continue collaborating with WFP and the local Ministry of Transport and Road to build more bridges in other parts of the region and develop the infrastructure Southern Sudan.

Drivers who were crossing the new bridge during the inauguration expressed their delight over the new bridge stating they faced difficulties before the construction.

The single line Yei bridge is 42 meters in length, 4.2 meters wide and can withstand 40 tones of weight.
