"De Boer gave in his resignation in a way that it actually allows the secretary-general to appoint a new executive-secretary well in time to make sure that the negotiation process is not perturbed in any major way. We don't know how long this will take but it will certainly take a few months and the SG is prepared to get recruitment process going as soon as possible."

STORYLINE:

The Director of the United Nations (U.N.) Climate Change support team said  today that Yvo De Boer, the top UN climate change official had been looking at the possibility of stepping down from his post for some time.

Speaking to reporters at headquarters in New York, Janos Pasztor said that Yvo De Boer had informed Ban Ki-moon that his final decision was because of his desire to would work in the private sector and also in academia.

De Boer will stay onboard in his current position until 1 July, before joining the consultancy group KPMG as a Global Adviser on Climate and Sustainability and working with several universities.

Pasztor also said that De Boer had given in his resignation in a way that it actually allowed the secretary-general to appoint a new executive-secretary before the next global conference to be held in Mexico later this year.
