"I can tell you that Mr. Gambari moved to UNAMID as of 1 January; but I know that the decision not to continue with the Iraq compact aspect – because it was a dual headed function – was taken fairly recently, I think that was way back in November or something like that. So I don't know exactly when that went out and how that was financially handled. I think that when it comes to Myanmar, that's a special political mission and the special political mission of course is supplemented by extra budgetary funds."

STORYLINE

Under-Secretary-General for Management Angela Kane responded to questions today (7 January) that had been raised about the nature of UN Special Envoy Ibrahim Gambari's contracts.

During a press briefing on budgetary issues and other matters Kane said that she did not know exactly how Gambari's recent appointment as head of the UN-African Union peacekeeping force in the conflict-hit Darfur region (UNAMID) was "financially handled", but denied that there had been a "shortfall in funding and therefore he was moved to the Darfur post."

Gambari, a former Minister for External Affairs of Nigeria took on the post as Joint African Union-United Nations Special Representative for Darfur on 1 January replacing Rodolphe Adada of Congo.

He had previously served as the Secretary-General's Special Adviser on the International Compact with Iraq and Other Political Issues while also serving the Secretary-General in pursuing the good offices mandate on Myanmar under one salary.  Reporters questioned whether the reasons for the move had been financial.

Kane insisted that the Myanmar post had been fully funded and stressed that the UNAMID appointment "has nothing to do with whatever funding particularities there were in terms of the Myanmar-Iraq situation."
