DOHA / DARFUR PEACE TALKS

Civil society groups from Darfur and Khartoum are meeting in Qatar to participate in the ongoing Darfur peace process. Traditional administrators, religious leaders, women, youth and intellectuals are expected to inject views in the peace process in areas such as reconciliation, voluntary returnees of IDPS, land disputes and compensation, human rights and justice among others. "We are launching today in DOHA inclusive peace talks to Darfur intended to result in the comprehensive resolution of the underlying causes of crisis, the overcoming prejudices caused by war and the acceleration of the program of social economic development. To this end, it is essential that civil society representative of the population participate in both analysis of the causes of the crisis and the search for solution alongside the armed movements and the government of Sudan."

STORYLINE:

Civil society organizations from Darfur and Khartoum arrived in the Doha, Qatar this week to participate in the ongoing Darfur peace talks between the government of Sudan and rebel movements from Sudan's western region of Darfur.
 
The group started consultative meetings with the hope of tackling issues such as wealth sharing, security, reconciliation, and development.

At the launch ceremony, leaders from the international community, the League of Arab States, African Union and United Nations expressed concerns over the crisis in Darfur, urging Sudan and particularly civil society to come up with a consensus that will have a positive impact on the next round of talks between the government and the armed movements.

The hybrid AU-UN Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) facilitated the selection of civil society representatives and flew them to Doha early this week.

The civil society representatives, including traditional administrators, religious leaders, women, youth and intellectuals from Darfur and Khartoum, are expected to wrap up and present the key findings to the joint mediation team tasked by the United Nations and African Union to review and deliberate in this second phase of the comprehensive peace talks.

Qatar has been hosting the Darfur peace talks for over a year and will host the civil society's five-day conference this week. Over the past three years, the rebels have splintered, severely complicating efforts to negotiate an end to the conflict.
