STORYLINE:

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon reiterated his call for world leaders to reach agreement at upcoming climate change talks as he arrived in Norway's capital Oslo this weekend, on the first leg of a trip to the Polar ice rim to witness first-hand the impact of global warming.

Just two weeks of negotiation time remain before the start of December's climate change conference in Copenhagen, Denmark's capital. Countries are expected to wrap up negotiations on a new pact to go into effect when the Kyoto Protocol's first commitment period ends in 2012.

At a joint press conference Monday (31 August) with Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg, Ban responded to questions sparked by a recently leaked internal memo by a senior Norwegian diplomat that had criticized his leadership style.

Last week, Ban told reporters in New York that he had appreciated a private phone call from Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere apologizing for the matter but welcomed constructive criticism.

The Secretary-General also commended Norway for its strong support of the United Nations.

In Oslo, Ban also attended a wreath-laying ceremony at the Trygve Lie Memorial in honor of the first elected Secretary-General of the United Nations. Trygve Lie, a Norwegian politician, served from 1946 to 1952.

The Secretary-General also met with Norway's King Harald V, before heading towards Svalbard, an archipelago in the Arctic Ocean from where he will study the impact of climate change on the polar ice rim.

On Thursday, Ban is expected to travel on to Geneva to attend the Third World Climate Conference.
