"Cameroonians have hosted many numbers, a quarter of a million from neighbouring countries. So I wanted to see how it was going. How the people are feeling how they are surviving and how they feel about returning, if they are, I have many, many questions. I am curious to come here."

STORYLINE:

On her first visit to Cameroon UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Mia Farrow saw how malnutrition is devastating the country.

Fifty-two thousand children die here every year because they don't get enough to eat.

 "So in a country of relative wealth, a middle income country there is really no need for 52,000 children to die each year of malnutrition. So I've really come here to see where the holes are."

The village of Bazzama in eastern Cameroon bears an extra burden. Families escaping violence in the Central African Republic come here for help and treatment.

UNICEF supports 176 nutrition centres and 19 hospitals in Cameroon. But the needs are enormous.

Since 2003 63,000 refugees from the Central African Republic have flooded into  Cameroon. At a feeding centre in the village of Garga Sarali UNICEF provides food and healthcare.

Even though four out of ten regions in Cameroon suffer from high malnutrition rates, the country continues to share what little resources it has with neighbours. Ms Farrow hopes that her visit will call attention to the great needs that remain.
