"Global trade is collapsing. Hundreds of millions of people are losing their jobs, their income and their ability to survive. In too many parts of the world, frustration has erupted into violent protests, threatening stability and peace. Development efforts are sagging under the weight of the crisis. We expect negative effects in nearly every area covered by the Monterrey Consensus and the Doha Declaration on Financing for Development. Leaders around the world recognize the gravity of these problems."

"Reforming the international economic system requires many steps, and must involve all countries. The current system emerged through the 1944 United Nations Conference at Bretton Woods. The United Nations, with its critical role and responsibilities and its universal membership, should be fully engaged in the reform process. Peace, stability and prosperity are indivisible. Achieving these goals will take visionary reform and decisive action by all members of the international community."

"There are basically only two dishes at the global plate at the moment. One is the financial crisis and the politics related to that, the other issue is climate change. I think the combined force of the two is the biggest challenge to a generation of politicians since the Second World War. The challenge is huge; on the other hand, the world community has never been better prepared for facing such a challenge."

STORYLINE:

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said today (27 April 2009) that "development efforts are sagging under the weight of the crisis" and called for a reform of the current system of global economic governance.

Addressing a high-level meeting of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Ban said that with the collapse of global trade, "hundreds of millions of people are losing their jobs, their income and their ability to survive".

The Secretary-General pointed out that "leaders around the world recognize the gravity of these problems."
 
The Secretary-General said that reforming the international economic system "must involve all countries", with the United Nations "fully engaged in the reform process". He added that achieving these goals will require "visionary reform and decisive action by all members of the international community."

Ban appealed for nations to resist new forms of protectionism, and underscored the need to complete the development-oriented Doha Round of trade liberalization negotiations.

The Norwegian Minister of the Environment and International Development Erik Solheim – who met with the Secretary –General after the conference – said that there are "only two dishes at the global plate at the moment", the financial crisis and climate change, and that "the combined force of the two is the biggest challenge to a generation of politicians since the Second World War". He stressed that "the challenge is huge", but that "the world community has never been better prepared for facing such a challenge."
 
The Bretton Woods system, which emerged through the 1944 United Nations Conference at Bretton Woods, NH, established the rules for commercial and financial relations among the world's major industrial states.
