MADAGASCAR / MALNUTRITION

More than 400,000 people are living without food security in the south of Madagascar. A long drought compromised the harvest, leaving families with less food to eat. Now, up to a quarter million children may be at risk of disease and malnutrition. And without rain, many walk 20 kilometers, or drill 100 meters down, just for safe drinking water. UNICEF

STORYLINE: 
More than 400,000 people are living without food security in the south of Madagascar.

The last harvest was seriously compromised by long drought, so too were families' ability to feed their families.

As a result, up to a quarter million children are at risk of disease and malnutrition.

Nemerata says there has been no rain since she was pregnant with her twins. She has no solid food for them – apart from cactus fruit.

UNICEF and the government are training community outreach workers to identify the early stages of malnutrition and refer children in need of treatment to health center.

A UN flash appeal issued earlier this month aims to provide food supplements and clean water. 
There is also an the to address the nutrition security of children in the main towns – including the capital, Antananarivo – which have been affected by political instability and the socio-economic crisis there.
