In the southern Nigerian state of Ogun teams of community health workers have begun a four-day campaign to immunize more than 50 million children against polio. In 2003 controversy over the polio vaccine in northern Nigeria, led some to refuse immunization. This resulted in a tripling of cases of the crippling disease. UNICEF

UN / NUCLEAR TREATY

With the Central Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty coming into force on 21st March, the region became the first in the Northern Hemisphere to be free of such weapons. Ambassadors from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan agree that it will be “an essential element to strengthening regional security.” UNTV
