STORYLINE:

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is coordinating international efforts to support the government-led initiative, both conducting its own operations and also working with other partners.

SOUNDBITE (Creole) Jean Sebastien Jerome, IOM Field Assistant:

The aim of the exercise is to identify where the residents of the largest post-earthquake settlements come from, and to explore future options - including facilitating a return to their home areas, helping host families to accommodate them, improving conditions in ad hoc settlements, and the planning and establishment of new sites.

The registration drive is a first step of a resettling process aimed at placing people in more appropriate housing. The authorities are trying to identify and when possible enable displaced people to return home and rebuild.

IOM’s registration team is 100 people strong and at an average rate of 3,000 families per day it has already registered most people living in the larger campsites.
