“If you think about New York, it’s about buildings, so how can you make green buildings? And the mayor has indicated today that they are going to reach out and see how they can make energy efficiency happen in all of the buildings. We can really lower the footprint - the amount of energy a building uses - by fifty percent. And we can do that in a way that will pay back in one or two years, that makes great business sense; that makes great sense for society to do it. We need to get on and do it.”

STORYLINE:

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today (23 June) extended an invitation to heads of State and government to attend an “unprecedented” global summit at the United Nations to spur action towards reaching an ambitious climate change pact later this year.

At an outdoor press conference accompanied by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Ban said that “we have an unprecedented opportunity to change course and retool our economy to generate green growth and green jobs for a lasting recovery” ahead of the Climate Change Conference  in Copenhagen, Denmark in December.

He added that “if we ask to seal the deal in Copenhagen we need to be bold and ambitious and visionary”.

The Secretary-General pointed out that the UN can raise awareness of the issue of global warming, but ultimately, “it is the parliaments, it is the presidents, and prime ministers, and ministers, and governors and mayors of the world that have to act.”

The high-level meeting will be held at UN Headquarters on 22 September, just over two months before the start of the climate change conference in Copenhagen, where countries are expected to wrap up negotiations on an agreement to slash greenhouse gas emissions.

The summit will occur on the eve of the start of the General Assembly’s high-level debate. It will also take place during Climate Week NYC, an initiative to last from 21-25 September, unveiled today at the same press conference by Mayor Bloomberg.

Bloomberg said that he hoped Climate Week will help bring world and local leaders into action “and also inspire greater greener efforts by all New Yorkers”.

Initiatives taken by city of New York to combat climate change include committing nearly $200 million to retrofit public buildings in an energy-efficient manner and using $200 million of federal stimulus funds to make public housing more environmentally-friendly.

After the press conference Steve Howard, CEO of the Climate Group told UNifeed that New York City is “about buildings” and that making buildings more energy efficient “makes great business sense” and “makes great sense for society”.

Climate Week will also include the the launch of the 2009 Carbon Disclosure Project report and a series of high-level world leader and CEO roundtables by The Climate Group. In addition, the City of New York will engage city residents and visitors in events designed to show how they can do their part to combat climate change.
