UN in ACTION, an award-winning television series, reports on the work of the UN and its Agencies around the world. These 3- to 5-minute features illustrate UN peacekeeping efforts as well as projects aimed at reducing poverty and human suffering, fighting disease, providing humanitarian assistance and stimulating economic growth. The Pascale Toussaint rehabilitation centre opened in northern Haiti to provide physical rehabilitation for paraplegic patients, many from the 2010 earthquake. One of them, Leon Gensly who lost the use of his legs during the quake is now competing to qualify for London 2012 Paralympic Games.

Farmers in Croatia are using nuclear technology to tackle the Mediterranean fruit fly, a common pest that poses a serious threat to the country’s lucrative fruit industry. The technique, also known as “birth control for insects”, suppresses populations by breeding large numbers of males that are sterilized through radiation.

In Nshili, Rwanda, an estimated one million people lost their lives during the 1994 genocide. The area is still recovering from the impact of this horrific moment in history. Victims of torture across the continent of Africa are turning to the Africa Centre for the Prevention and Resolution of Conflict in Senegal to help them overcome the psychological and physical scars of war. In 1993, Bangladesh found its main source of fresh water tainted with naturally occurring arsenic posing a public health risk to millions. Since then, the country has partnered with the World Bank and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to introduce isotope hydrology techniques to locate safe sources of water.

Fishermen in the twin island of Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean are facing one challenge after another while working the ocean, searching for fish. Recently sightings of dead fish along the southern coast worried them. The Government is taking steps to ensure that the fishing industry is protected and the oceans safe.
