FISTULA IN CHAD
"Thousands of women in Chad, north-central Africa, are faced with a condition known as obstetric fistula. This is partly because Chadians follow a tradition of marrying at a very young age – 13, 14, 15 – which leads to early childbirth. The United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA, is making it easy for women to undergo surgery by paying for the operation and providing subsidies to help them get back on their feet. It is also changing legislation to prohibit marriage of girls under eighteen."
