UNEP: Li Bing Bing on Ozone

Chinese superstar Li Bing Bing encourages consumers to look for ozone-friendly appliances to help slow global warming in accordance with The Montreal Protocol. The Protocol is an international treaty that went into force on 16 September 1987. Hailed as one of the most successful international environmental agreements, all countries have now ratified this treaty, which seeks to phase out chemicals that deplete of the ozone layer, which acts as a shield against harmful ultraviolet rays. Ozone depleting substances (ODS) like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and halon, are commonly used in refrigerant and air conditioning, fire fighting solvents, and agriculture.

Shining the Light on Ending Violence Against Women

The new initiative “Give Light, Get Light” campaign launched to address HIV and sexual and gender-based violence in conflict and post-conflict settings.
The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) is partnering with the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) to shine a light on ending violence against women, and empowering them to remain free from HIV.
UNAIDS is partnering with the creators of the inflatable solar-powered light, LuminAID, who will be donating up to 1000 lights through their “Give Light, Get Light” campaign. LuminAID will donate one light for every “Give Light, Get Light” package purchased during the coming months.
The initiative is being launched to coincide with the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence, which started on 25 November—the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women—and concludes on 10 December 2012, Human Rights Day. The 16 Days campaign is widely used around the world to call for the elimination of all forms of violence against women. For more information, please visit:

Michael Douglas, United Nations Messenger of Peace, disarmament activist and internationally acclaimed actor/producer is calling on children and teens across the globe to use their creative talents to promote a "World Free of Nuclear Weapons."
Youth in three age groups (5-8, 9-12 and 13-17) are invited to participate by drawing, painting, or sketching to create artwork imagining a world without bombs, without wars, without fear.

The tremendous interest generated by the Day of 5 Billion on 11 July 1987 led to the establishment of World Population Day as an annual event. For more than 20 years, 11 July has been an occasion to mark the significance of population trends and related issues.
This year, as the world population is expected to surpass 7 billion, UNFPA and partners are launching a campaign called 7 Billion Actions. It aims to engage people, spur commitment and spark actions related to the opportunities and challenges presented by a world of 7 billion people.
Move it! is a UNAIDS campaign which aims to create a movement of support for a successful outcome at the United Nations General Assembly High Level Meeting on AIDS in New York from 8-10 June 2011.
This key meeting of UN member states and civil society will look at progress made on AIDS since 2001 and renew their commitments to HIV which will shape the future of the response.

July 11th is World Population Day. This year, the theme is to highlight the importance of data for development. Counting everyone is an integral part of ensuring that we take everyone into account. Good demographic data is critical for planning schools, health systems and public transportation, for designing policies based on future population projections, for monitoring the effectiveness of service delivery and much more.
As the world’s top soccer stars take the field for the World Cup in South Africa, another set of stars are showing off their footwork in the playground of a Haitian orphanage. Thanks to the nutritious food aid provided to them by World Food Programme, they have the energy to hope, dream and play.
Oscar-winning actor Sean Penn is a leading supporter of World Food Programme's fight against hunger. This PSA features Mr. Penn and highlights the need for governments to remember the world’s hungry as they discuss multi-billion dollar financial rescue packages.
INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR DISASTER REDUCTION-OCTOBER 13

October 13th is International Day for Disaster Reduction. This year's theme: My City is Getting Ready! The United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) is calling on its partners to play a more active role to protect cities against disasters. Many cities have been disrupted this year by disasters: earthquakes in Haiti, Chile and New Zealand; floods and heavy rainfalls in Pakistan, Eastern Europe, Mozambique and other parts of Africa; forest fires in Russia; and volcanic eruptions in Indonesia and Iceland. All have caused huge human suffering and economic damage. Cities have never been so at risk.
October 16th is World Food Day. As part of the ongoing 1billionhungry campaign initiative by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations(FAO) a PSA was produced in honor of this important day.
EMBRACE A WORLD FREE OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS

The General Assembly of the United Nations designated 29 August as the International Day against Nuclear Tests through resolution 64/35.
The Day is dedicated to create awareness and education about the devastating effects of nuclear weapons on humankind and the environment and is an urgent call to action to end nuclear tests as a means to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons - one of the key aspirations of people around the world.

For World Humanitarian Day 2010, 19 August, a 30" and 60" PSAs are produced based on the 4 minute short film "I am a Humanitarian Worker" featuring 50 shots from 50 countries of 50 aid workers around the world, 'passing' a piece of paper/sign to each other with simple messaging on each
page which, when put together, attempts to tell the story of humanitarian aid workers in 2010.

To kick-off the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Goodwill Ambassadors, Didier Drogba and Zinedine Zidane, launched an anti-poverty TV spot appealing for the world to live up to the challenge and join the team that will beat poverty.
“There can be no spectators in the fight against poverty,” said Chelsea striker Drogba, and Cote d’Ivoire national team captain. “We all need to be on the pitch to improve the lives of millions of poor people in this world.”
The multilingual public service announcement will be broadcast during the tournament in South Africa and aims to bolster efforts to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), eight internationally-agreed targets which aim to reduce poverty, hunger, maternal and child deaths, disease, inadequate shelter and gender inequality by 2015.
WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY (WED)

5 June is World Environment Day (WED). This year's theme is targeted to be the people’s day for positive action and demonstrates how individual actions can create an exponential impact. Whether an organized event at our place of work or school, or an individual gesture like changing to energy-efficient light-bulbs or taking public transportation, WED celebrates every effort.
The spot features Goodwill Ambassador, Gisele Bundchen, and a host of individuals from around the world each demonstrating his or her unique commitment to WED.
1 BILLION HUNGRY: I'M MAD AS HELL.

Food and Agriculture Organization launches on-line anti-hunger petition on 11 May 2010, "The 1billionhungry project", calling on people to get angry at the fact that around a billion people suffer from hunger.
One of the features of the campaign is a promotional video made by British actor Jeremy Irons in which he plays a character based on a famous scene from the film "Network" where Peter Finch, who won an Oscar for his performance, says he is "as mad as hell".
Events will be organized worldwide during the week of 7 – 11 April 2010 and the global goals are:
•1000 cities: to open up public spaces to health, whether it be activities in parks, town hall meetings, clean-up campaigns, or closing off portions of streets to motorized vehicles.
•1000 lives: to collect 1000 stories of urban health champions who have taken action and had a significant impact on health in their cities.
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) mobilized rapidly to address the impact of the earthquake in Haiti and focuses on providing time-critical early recovery assistance.
UNDP Cash-for-work programme employs over 35,000 affected Haitians in rubble removal and construction. The programme is intended to kick start the local economy. It hopes to help the affected communities to rebuild their lives, livelihoods and rehabilitate essential social infrastructure.
UNDP Goodwill Ambassador Zidane is committed to helping the people of Haiti recover from the catastrophe.
In a collective call to action, UNIFEM Goodwill Ambassador and Say NO – UNiTE Spokesperson Nicole Kidman joins others to say “no is no in any language” when putting an end to violence against women.
