The General Assembly appoints by acclamation Kofi Annan (Ghana) as the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations. Attending the swearing-in ceremony in the General Assembly Hall are: Nane Annan, Mrs. Leia Boutros Boutros-Ghali and Javier Perez de Cuellar.
