In March this year, some 2,400 officers and men, part of the Indian UN Congo (ONUC) contingent, were recalled to strengthen India's own defences. The Indian soldiers were replaced by reinforcements from Indonesia, which brought the number of Indonesian UN troops in the Congo to 2,000.
Indian soldiers aboard the US troop transport carrier, "General Blatchford," are waving farewell when the ship leaves Mombasa for Bombay, where the troops arrived on 25 March.
