UN officials today joined millions of people around the world who are taking a stance against violence against women as part of the "One Billion Rising" campaign. The event at UN Headquarters was held under the auspices of the Secretary-General’s “UNiTE to End Violence against Women” campaign. The "One Billion Rising" global campaign is sponsored by the V-Day Organization, and seeks to mobilize men and women around the world on Valentine’s Day – observed annually in various countries on 14 February – to raise their voices to stop violence against women and girls.

UN Women Executive Director Michele Bachelet addressed the event via video. Among those listening to her message was Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson (right).
