A.U. and Government Forces Capture Kismayo from Shabaab
A Kenyan soldier with the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) stands in front of vehicles that were destroyed a week earlier by Kenyan Air Force missile strikes inside a warehouse at Kismayo Airport, once firmly under the control of the Al Shabaab militant group.
The port city of Kismayo was captured from Al Shabaab yesterday in a joint advance by AMISOM and Somali National Army (SNA) forces. A once feared and brutal extremist group, Shabaab has lost a succession of strategic towns and villages across Somalia to the SNA and AMISOM since the group withdrew from fixed positions in the capital, Mogadishu, in August of 2011.
