Secretary-General Supports SAFE Stoves for Women at Risk
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon (third from left) attends an event hosted by Josette Sheeran (fourth from left), Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP), on the sidelines of the UN Conference on Climate Change in Copenhagen. The event promoted the WFP and other UN agencies' Safe Access to Firewood and Alternative Energy in Humanitarian Settings (SAFE) initiative, to launch next year. SAFE will provide fuel-efficient, environmentally-friendly stoves to women in Sudan and Uganda who risk rape, murder and other forms of violence when they stray from their homes to collect firewood.
