United Nations Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali opened the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) - or Earth Summit - on 3 June 1992, and Fernando Collor De Mello, President of Brazil was elected President of the Conference.

Mr. Strong, who serves as Secretary-General of UNCED, also presided as Secretary-General of the Environmental Conference at Stockholm, 5-16 June 1972.
