IAEA Urges Use of Nuclear Science to Improve Crop Varieties and to Fight World Hunger
02/12/2008
The International Atomic Energy Agency is launching a campaign on Food Security (nuclear science and plant breeding), to highlight the work of the IAEA's Plant Breeding Unit that uses nuclear technologies to improve crop varieties and to fight world hunger. The effort - which should not be confused with genetically modified food - is aimed at producing crops that are tolerant to harsh conditions, resistant to diseases, more nutritious or have better yields. The IAEA has called for increased investment in the plant breeding technique to bolster efforts aimed at pulling millions of people out of the hunger trap.
